Salzburg

Salzburg was probably my favorite city on the trip. I love the charm of the city, especially with the white buildings and mint-colored roofs. It was one of the more exhausting days because we had the entire afternoon to explore the city on our own (and half the time we were lost).

We started off the day with a walking tour of the city. I remember visiting a few churches and listening to stories about the Sound of Music (and how most of it was not filmed in Austria), but nothing spectacular.

Marzipan is really popular in Central Europe, but particularly in Salzburg. We tried the original mozart-inspired chocolate marzipan ball and it was really good! There are several types of marzipan in the department stores, but this one claims to be the original (and I'm glad it doesn't have the silly cartoon of Mozart).
Of course, by the time the we finished our walking tour, we were starting to get hungry. Lucky for us, we ended the tour in the middle of a market. After our disappointing German pretzels, we decided to try the Austrian version. Thumbs up!! They were soft, chewy, and HUGE! We browsed the market and picked up some meat and cheese before our afternoon adventure.
We decided to hike to the top of the hill to the castle and the view was phenomenal.
We skipped an actual tour of the castle (we'd already seen so many) and continued on a trail from our guidebook. With a light lunch and lots of walking, we were all delirious. Luckily, we were able to find the beer garden at the end of the trail.

Augustiner, my favorite! The best Marzen I have ever had in my life. The main reason I would return to Salzburg in a heartbeat.
